  46. 1.      Overview

  48.         This CD contains the ELSA Display Driver for Microsoft Windows
  49.         95/98.
  50.  
  51.         The driver supports 256, 65536 and 16 Million colors in
  52.         all resolutions available on used ELSA board.

  71.         sure you have all the files mentioned above!

  76. 3.      Installation
  77.

  79. 3.1     First installation of ELSA Display Driver
  80.  
  81.         First install Windows 95/98 without special drivers for the ELSA
  82.         graphics board. The installation procedure should
  83.         find a PCI VGA-compatible display adapter and ask for a
  84.         "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer".
  85.         - Push the "OK"-button
  86.  
  87.         - "Copy manufacturer's files from:"
  88.           CD-Drive: this directory (e.g.: E:\ERAZOR II\WIN95)
  89.           The neccessary files will be copy and Windows 95/98 asks 
  90.           for restart.
  91.  
  92.         - Push the "Yes"-button
  93.  
  94.         Normally you need to boot your system. Push the button "Restart
  95.         now".

  97. 3.2     Manuell installation of ELSA Display Driver
  98.         under Windows 95

  101.         - Start the dialog "Properties for Display" by clicking right
  102.           mouse button on the desktop or select per Control Panel 
  103.           -> "Display".

  105.         - Select the Property Page "Settings" 
  106.  
  107.         - Click on "Advanced Properties"

  109.         - Push the button "Change...". A dialog "Select Device" will 
  110.           pop up.
  111.  
  112.         - Push the button "Have Disk..." and "Browse..."

  114.         - change to the 'drivers' directory on the WINNERware CD.
  115.  
  116.         - Select your ELSA display adapter in the "Devices" list.
  117.  
  118.         - Close the dialog "Select device". At this time the
  119.           screen may flicker for a moment. This is not a bug! Windows 
  120.           is trying to find out, which graphics modes are available with
  121.           this driver.

  123.         - Please answer the following questions with "OK" or "Apply" and
  124.           reboot the system.

  126.         - Now you can select resolution and color depth in the main
  127.           dialog "Properties for Display". For the first installation
  128.           you should select 1024x768 in HiColor. This configuration
  129.           is available for all memory configurations on all ELSA
  130.           Boards.

  132.         - Close "Properties for Display" by "OK" or "Apply
  133.  
  134.         After the restart the configuration of the ELSA display adapter
  135.         driver starts from the Windows desktop.

  140.         - Select the Property Page "Settings" or "ELSA Settings".

  145.           ELSA Settings gives you full control to configure your ELSA
  146.           display adapter perfectly. You can change resolution, color
  147.           depth and refresh rate.

  154.         - Start the dialog "Display Properties" by clicking the right
  155.           mouse button on the desktop or select per Control Panel 
  156.           -> "Display".

  158.         - Select the Property Page "Settings" and than select "advanced"
  159.           , "Adapter" - "Change".
  160.  
  161.         - The "Update Device Driver Wizard" starts and helps you 
  162.           through the installation procedure for the new graphics 
  163.           boards display driver. Select "Next"
  164.  
  165.         - In this dialog push the first checkbox push the "Next" 
  166.           button check "Specify a location" and change to the WIN9x 
  167.           directory on the WINNERware CD for your ERAZOR II board.
  168.         
  169.         - Press "OK" or "Apply" to install the specified driver.

  171.         - If you use an ELSA monitor, make the same procedure for
  172.           "Monitor Type" in the "Monitor" dialog.
  173.  
  174.         - Close the "Display Properties" dialog. At this time the
  175.           screen flickers a moment. This is not a bug! Windows tries to
  176.           find out, which graphics modes are available with this

  251. 5.      Release notes
  252.  
  253. 5.1     DirectDraw/Direct3D support
  254.  
  255.  
  256.         The display driver do support DirectDraw/Direct3D from 
  257.         DirectX 5/6, but to use it in an application, you must install 
  258.         DirectDraw/Direct3D. The Microsoft DirectDraw/Direct3D 
  259.         components are not included in the standard retail version 
  260.         of Windows 95. You need an installation of DirectX 5/6.
  261.  
  262.         To install DirectDraw/Direct3D use the CDSETUP from your
  263.         ERAZOR CD or start the DXSETUP.EXE in the folder:
  264.  
  265.         Drive:\Winware\MSAPPS\DIRECTX5\directx oe better:

  280. 5.2     AGP and Windows 95/98
  281.  
  282.  
  283.         AGP is supported only by the Windows version OSR-2.1 or higher. 
  284.         This is available after upgrading a Windows 95b (OSR2) version 
  285.         by the USB-Update 'USBSUPP.EXE'.
  286.         The version number of your installed Windows can be found in
  287.         the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
  288.         Windows\CurrentVersion\Version and VersionNumber.
  289.         The Entries for OSR-2.1 are:

  292.         Version       "Windows95"
  293.         VersionNumber "4.03.1212" or "4.03.1214"

  295.         If your mainboard has no Intel chipset it may be necessary to
  296.         install a chipset specific software patch to get best support 
  297.         and performance using the AGP port. 
  298.         Normally this patch should be delivered on CD with your system
  299.         or mainboard. Otherwise you may get the newest patches on the 
  300.         internetsites of the chipset vendors. 
  301.         Other chipset vendors are, e.g.: VIA, SIS, ALI.

  307.         If you have any questions about full AGP support on non Intel 
  308.         mainboards please consult your distributor.

  310. 5.3     Free defineable refreshrates (monitor timings)
  311.  
  312.         It is neccessary to install and use the  specified INF - file 
  313.         delivered with your monitor. For information about to install 
  314.         please look above or use the windows documentation.  
  315.

  318. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  319.  
  320.  
  321.         This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  322.         hints on work arounds.
  323.  
  324.         - for maximum performance the AntiAliasing checkbox in: Display 
  325.           Properties - Settings - Advanced - 3D Settings - More 3D,
  326.           should be set to "Disable"
  327.  
  328.         - If you install the ELSA Display Driver over an nVIDIA Display 
  329.           Driver, the key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
  330.           CurrentVersion\OpenGLDrivers\RIVATNT will not actualised. 
  331.           Replace "nv3ogl.dll" with "ELSAEIIO.DLL"  
  332.  
  333.         - Do not use "Custom Direct3D Settings" -names with more than 
  334.           twenty characters in the "3D-Settings" property tabs. Some 
  335.           failures may occure while using WINMANSuite.
  336.  
  337.         - Task switching while 3D applications are active leads to 
  338.           corruption of textures in some cases
  339.  
  340.         - The DirectDraw resolution 480x360 works with too low frequency
  341.           for most monitors. Please take a look at 5.3.
  342.  
  343.         - OpenGL screen savers oftenly crash if an additional suspend 
  344.           is executed by the system or manually.
  345.  
  346.         - Switching VESA modes to windowed mode (normaly an error
  347.           pops up) leads to system crash
  348.  
  349.         - Windows suspend during active 3D applications may cause system
  350.           crash in Windows 95
  351.  
  352.         - For best display quality, in the 'More Direct3D' section of 3D
  353.           Settings Texel Alignment should be set to "upper left corner".
  354.  
  355.         - Mouse trails are not displayed, because the Riva chip 
  356.           accelerates this Windows functionality in hardware
  357.  
  358.         - The X-Demo benchmark by EGOSOFT shows anomalies under Windows 98 
  359.           in the upper- and lower part of the screen.
